What is Horse-Ball

Horse-Ball is a highly spectacular equestrian sport which can be defined as a kind of "basket-ball on a horseback". It was started off in France by French Army Captain Clave, a showjumping World Champion in the 30's. In the 70's the French Equestrian Federation defined the rules on which the game is now played. In 1999 the International Horse-Ball Federation was created to manage and promote the sport across the globe. Horse-Ball today is played by thousands of people in 3 continents. In April 2004 FIHB was recognised by the FEI and Horse-Ball became a Regional discipline in Group I and II.

Four Horseball teams representing the top clubs in their respective countries - Chambly in France, College Vasco de Gama Club in Portugal, Nottingham in England and the European All Stars (2 players from each country), competed at the UK's Sheffield BSJA Open Championships last weekend. The teams played an exciting round robin competition culminating in a final on the Sunday between the European All Stars and Chambly with a decisive Chambly win of 11-2, Nottingham 3rd and Portugal 4th.

Crowds of up to 6,000 a night were thrilled by the riders and swarmed the players afterwards for information on Horseball and riders autographs.

The standard of play, horsemanship and turn out was fantastic. The 3 show veterinary surgeons complimented the Horseball teams on the horse's fitness and well-being. The thanks for that must go to the group of 12 grooms from all three countries who worked hard to produce the 25 horses to the high expectations of the show.

The show organisers themselves were extremely please again to be able to stage such an exciting spectacle for their audience. This is the 3rd year that the Sheffield Open has hosted Horseball, the French have so far managed to win each tournament, last years final was between Nottingham and Chambly with Belgium 3rd and Europe 4th.
